Position Title Student - Mathematics Supplemental Instruction Mentor - Spring 2021

Summary

The Math Lab Supplemental Instruction program is looking to bring on one additional SI mentor who will provide guidance to students and SI leaders. Additionally, SI mentors will work with the SI coordinators throughout the semester to assist with observations, providing feedback, and developing on-going training.

Position Overview
On top of leading SI sessions, SI mentors are expected to observe other leaders and provide them with supportive feedback. Mentors are also expected to contribute to certain Math Lab initiatives like collaborating with other mentors or leaders, creating and facilitating on-going training, and contributing to Studypalooza at the end of the semester.

The Math Lab engages with students in the learning process to reinforce mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills as a way of cultivating an understanding of their academic coursework and the world around them. We recognize the opportunity—and responsibility—to inclusively support all students in ways that facilitate self-discovery and build confidence in their mathematical pursuits.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be a current UVU student.
  • Must be a current SI Leader at UVU.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Effective SI mentors are:

  • Successful at fulfilling all responsibilities of an SI leader;
  • Excellent communicators that observe 4-6 SI sessions a month and provide supportive feedback to SI leaders;
  • Skilled facilitators that can collaborate with other mentors to plan and lead returning SI leader training. Training topics include professional development and SI fundamentals (e.g. maintaining relationships with faculty, planning SI sessions, creating a welcoming learning environment, etc.);
  • Well-versed in the principles and fundamentals of Supplemental Instruction;
  • Reliable with strong time and task-management skills;
  • Familiar with on-campus resources.

Effective SI mentors can:

  • Cultivate professional relationships with students, faculty, and other SI leaders;
  • Collaborate with other mentors and SI leaders to provide program support;
  • Provide meaningful and individual guidance to SI leaders;
  • Communicate regularly with SI coordinators regarding SI leader updates or other important information about SI;
  • Maintain confidentiality;
  • Contribute to the operation and development of the SI program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Mentoring/Teaching/Training experience
Physical Requirements
  • Work is normally performed in a classroom environment
  • Frequent standing, sitting and walking
  • Frequent use of fine hand manipulation associated with the use of a computer

Please include a cover letter answering the following questions:
• Why are you interested in being an SI Mentor?
• Describe how your experience with coaching, teaching, training, or mentoring in educational (or other) settings has prepared you to become an SI Mentor.
• A large part of the SI Mentor position will be to train returning SI leaders on topics that weren’t covered in “basic training” last semester. These topics would be classified as “professional development” training. For example, returning SI leaders might receive training about conflict resolution techniques, discussion on motivation, or about stress management. List at least 3 “professional development” topics (other than the ones above) which YOU would be willing to train SI leaders on.
