Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), was founded in 2010 to continue fulfilling QF’s vision of unlocking human potential. HBKU is an emerging research university that acts as a catalyst for positive change in Qatar and the region while having a global impact.

Job Purpose:

To contribute to research on defined projects.

Key Result Areas:

  • Conduct research under supervision, either as a member of a team under the direct supervision of a principal investigator (PI) or where appropriate, semi-independently in a way that contributes to a defined area of research under the general direction of a PI
  • Help develop new research objectives, methodology and solutions relating to the field of research of the PI
  • Perform day-to-day experimental activities and ensure proper and accurate documentation for future referencing
  • Collect and analyze data to achieve the greatest benefit from conducted research
  • Develop and design prototypes utilizing appropriate tools, methodologies and techniques to achieve the required results of the project/research
  • Create reports on findings and recommendations from the conducted analysis and research to present to the PI, Dean, Provost, and appropriate research committees
  • Prepare presentations related to research activities intended for the cross-functional teams, PIs, and others as appropriate
  • Contribute to HBKU academic programs in appropriate roles as requested and directed by PIs
  • Assist faculty and PIs in supervising Master’s and PhD students in relevant labs and for theses / dissertation committees as requested by PIs
  • Participate in the preparation of experiments and, laboratory and research procedures to ensure that they are aligned to the objectives of the PI and the lab
  • Work with lab managers to ensure appropriate records and documentation of research experiments, samples and specimens examined are maintained and regularly updated to ensure the accuracy of laboratory reports and compliance with national regulatory requirements as well as international best practices
  • Collaborate with lab managers to ensure a safe and healthy laboratory environment in compliance with national regulatory requirements and international best practices
  • Perform literature searches, attend scientific meetings, and keep abreast of literature in own field; participate in the writing of scientific papers
  • Monitor and keep abreast of technological and scientific developments
  • Develop and maintain networks within the national and international research community to increase knowledge and research skills and to enhance the reputation of HBKU research
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned

Operating Environment, Framework and Boundaries:

  • Duties are performed in an office and laboratory setting according to supervisor’s instructions, all relevant HBKU policies and procedures, and all regulatory/best practice requirements and protocols.

Communications and Working Relationships:

  • Supervisor - frequent contact to provide guidance, project updates and for approvals
  • Lab Managers – contact as needed to discuss experimental set-up, required equipment and consumables, monitoring, compliance, and documentation/ record-keeping
  • Other researchers and scientists (locally, regionally and internationally) – regular contact for knowledge sharing in order to keep up to date with the latest technological and research developments relevant to the field

  • Evaluates different options when solving problems
  • Refrains from jumping to conclusions in the absence of clear evidence. Takes time to collect facts before developing a solution
  • Considers the medium term as well as immediate short-term impact of outcomes and actions
  • Demonstrates an awareness of the impact of preferred solution on other projects/ related problems

Decision Making Authority & Responsibility:

  • Accepts responsibility / accountability for own decisions and explains the rationale
  • Reviews available information in conjunction with interested parties and arrives at decisions by consensus, judging degree of consultation needed to ensure commitment
  • Remains calm and resourceful when making difficult decisions, basing them on facts
  • Ensures decisions are taken by self and group after reviewing available information while exhibiting reasonable foresight

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • PhD in a field relevant to research topic
  • 0-3 years of relevant research experience as a postdoc
  • Experience interpreting technical data and creating concise reports 
  • Strong knowledge of applicable research regulations
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and articulate ideas clearly and concisely. Arabic proficiency a plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and in the technology of common equipment found in relevant labs
