Tenure: This award is paid in three parts at the start of the first semester in each year of study (after the date of withdrawal from study) being $500 in year two, $1,000 in year three and $1,500 in year four.

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (NZ division) and Industry partners Babcock with Marine Industrial Design wish to foster, encourage and support students who are keen to pursue an education and career in maritime engineering.

This Award is made to a talented individual each year in support of their learning costs to undertake and complete the Maritime Engineering degree course.


Selection criteria:
  • 1, Applicants must be NZ Citizens. 2. Applicants must be studying at AUT at the time of application in their first year of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) programme, have selected Maritime Engineering as their Major, and are completing eight level 5 papers.

How do students apply?
Applications will open in July. Applicants must complete the RINA (NZ)/Babcock MID Award application online through the AUT Scholarships Database and will be required to upload: 1. A one-page personal statement outlining the academic goals the applicant hopes to achieve and any career aspirations they have. 2. A copy of the applicant’s transcript will be added to the application by the Scholarships Office once semester 2 grades have been finalised.

Decision makers
First year GPA from semester 1 and 2 will be used to identify and shortlist potential candidates. Those shortlisted will attend an interview with RINA(NZ) and Babcock with Marine Industrial Design, who will consider GPA, Project work and interview findings in making the selection.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
The award recipient will be announced in December of each year. The recipient will attend a RINA (NZ) presentation of their award. The decision of the scholarship selection panel is final. If the panel is of the opinion that there is no applicant of sufficient merit, the scholarship will not be awarded.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Annual renewal of the scholarship is conditional on the student passing all papers in each year of study.

Additional information
The successful student (recipient) will also be offered a summer internship at Babcock/MID under a separate employment contract. Note: There is no commitment or requirement on completion of the course to undertake to work for any of the industry sponsors and the recipient is encouraged to explore all opportunities that may be available to them.
