The Opportunity
If you are looking for a rigorous graduate training, and want to make a substantial research contribution to the economics of health and health care, the Centre for Health Economics at Monash University offers a fully funded PhD in Health Economics .
In addition to the University scholarship covering all fees and a tax-free stipend of $40,000 per annum for 3.5 years for suitably qualified applicants, you will also have opportunities for paid research work and teaching. There are opportunities for funded travel and the potential to study for up to one year at one of our partner institutions in Europe or USA. As part of the PhD program, the candidate will undergo rigorous training in advanced health economics and related studies.
You will join a group of researchers at the Centre for Health Economics, Monash Business School with a supervisory team that includes clinical and health services colleagues in the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University funded by a number of research grants from the NHMRC and the Medical Research Future Fund.
The aim of the program is to fill evidence gaps in the design and implementation of national priorities for blood, and to provide econometric and health informatic modelling of health practices and systems. The use of blood products has many interesting economic aspects. Blood as a resource derives its therapeutic value from its ability to be donated, stored and transfused to treat illness. This value gives rise to a market for blood that can be separated into its demand and supply components. The supply side of the market concerns the collection, preparation, distribution and storage of blood products ahead of transfusion. The demand side concerns the prescription of blood products to patients to alleviate ill health. Potential projects within the program include using the Massive Transfusion Registry and other large datasets to analyse the causes and consequences of national variation in access to blood products on system performance; or the efficient use of novel blood products for major haemorrhage and blood cancers. As part of these projects, the PhD Candidate further will develop transferable skills in health economics and applied econometrics.

The Person
The project would suit someone with a strong research background in economics, econometrics, statistics, health services research, or health economics. It is NOT expected that the individual will have knowledge about the use of blood products. Applicants must have an excellent academic track record with a first class honours degree or master’s degree (with research component) in a relevant quantitative field (e.g. economics, econometrics and statistics). Domestic and overseas applicants will be considered, provided they fulfil the criteria for PhD admission, and demonstrate excellent research capacity.
