The study of cultural relations on an international scale tends to focus on the center-periphery dynamics that connect cultural management centers (Paris, Barcelona, New York) with the (ex-)colonies. Little attention has been paid to multipolar, decentralized or alternative flows outside the channels established by the hegemonic publishing industry. In this sense, the cultural and literary relations between Latin America and China have not been sufficiently studied either.
The position is opened for doctoral research projects focused on the literary and intellectual traffic between Latin America and China, preferably with regard to the framework established by the early Cold War, from the foundation of the People’s Republic of China by Mao Zedong until the Cultural Revolution. Research proposals that have as their object of analysis both textual (novels, memoirs, letters, poetry, translations, travel literature, etc.) and extratextual (intellectual networks, editorial policies, friendship clubs, cultural translation strategies, circulation of ideas, etc.) phenomena are of interest. The candidate must show competence in working with bibliographic and archival material in both Chinese and Spanish and, depending on the project, Portuguese.
