Position Description:   Apply
Macalester College invites applications for one year visiting position in Computer Science to begin Fall 2020. Candidates will have the option to teach between two courses (half-time) and four courses (full-time) in their first year. Pending a successful first year, candidates will have the option to renew their contract for a second year. Preferred candidates will have completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field or be pursuing a Ph.D and have completed their coursework. Candidates will work with existing faculty to gain teaching experience with courses at the introductory, intermediate and, potentially, advanced undergraduate level. Our department offers a Computer Science major and minor, along with majors and/or minors in both pure and applied math, statistics, and data science. We embrace the combined, collaborative nature of our Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) Department in which faculty and students collaborate across disciplines. MSCS is the largest department on campus in terms of enrollments, and in the graduating class of 2020 there are 120 MSCS majors (roughly 20% of the graduating class). Our faculty value pedagogical and curricular innovation, undergraduate research mentoring, and outreach to the vibrant Minneapolis and Saint Paul metropolitan community. The multidisciplinary environment in the department provides a rich and collegial setting for student education and faculty research. MSCS offers a robust environment for pedagogical growth in Computer Science. More than 40% of senior MSCS majors are in Computer Science and the department includes ten full-time computer scientists, plus a part-time instructor, and several other math faculty who contribute to the curriculum. Computer science courses typically enroll 15-30 students; undergraduate teaching assistants are available for introductory and intermediate courses. This visitor will participate in all aspects of the program, receive mentorship in teaching, curricular design, and research, and have opportunities to collaborate in research with students. Applicants may apply online via AcademicJobsOnline, or may email application materials to: Professor Shilad Sen, ssen@macalester.edu. Application materials should include a CV and cover letter that addresses courses or areas that the candidate can comfortably teach. Evaluation of applications will begin January 1st, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. Macalester College is a highly selective, private liberal arts college in the vibrant Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area, which has a population of approximately three million and is home to numerous colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota.
