Applications are invited for up to 4, three-year full-time PhD Studentships available from February 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter, within the Centre for Engineering Research at the University of Hertfordshire. The Centre for Engineering Research is home to the following Research Groups: Microfluidics and Microengineering, Materials and Structures, Energy and Sustainable Design, Bioengineering and Communications and Intelligent Systems. Successful applicants will be based in the Energy and Sustainable Design Research Group.
Outline of the Project:
The Centre welcomes the opportunity to support up to 4 PhDs in research addressing key challenges in the following areas:
Energy Conversion and Storage Systems
Thermofluids
Turbulent combustion modelling
Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS)
Electrical Motors and Drive / Electromagnetics
Efficient cooling systems and heat transfer enhancement
Renewable energy and Low Carbon Technologies
Advanced heat pump system and heat exchanger optimisation
Successful PhD applicants are expected to work independently in a collaborative research environment and will be supervised by lead academics within the Energy and Sustainable Design Research Group, and in particular Dr Amin Paykani, Dr Hongwei Wu, Dr Liang Li and Dr Wenbin Zhang. Description of the University of Hertfordshire :
The University of Hertfordshire (UH) is based in Hatfield only a short (30 minute) train journey away from central London. According to the latest UK-wide Research Excellence Framework 2014 over 90% of the submitted research at the UH was judged to be of international quality. The School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science is one of the largest in the UK. It hosts ten research groups and seven research centres incorporating around 180 research and academic staff and 200 researchers.
Applicant Requirements:
Applications are invited from individuals with a 1st or 2:1 in a relevant engineering or applied science discipline, a master’s degree or equivalent industrial experience would be desirable. We are seeking applicants with a good understanding of the underpinning research in one or more of the advertised research areas and strong analytical and programming skills. Prior research experience would be an advantage. In some areas priority will be given to applicants with demonstrated practical engineering skills and experimental experience.
