Luleå University of Technology is experiencing strong growth with world leading competence in several areas of research. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with industries such as Bosch, Ericsson, Scania, LKAB, SKF and leading international universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.8 billion per year. We currently have 1,700 employees and 15,100 students.

We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research. Drawing on our location in the Arctic region, we create global societal benefit.

The Division of Energy Science at Luleå University of Technology has an open Ph.D. position in the subject of Energy Engineering. In your research, you will develop fast pyrolysis processes for effective and sustainable conversion of biomass. You will both work with researchers from different fields (energy- and chemical engineering), universities/institutes (national and international), and with equipment/process technology owners.

The subject of Energy Engineering at the Division of Energy Science belongs to the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics. At the subject of Energy Engineering, we work closely with companies/industries in both research and student projects. The research conducted has high international standards, and we collaborate with researchers around the world.

Subject description
Energy engineering includes the development of technologies and processes for sustainable energy supply.  The research focuses on bioenergy technologies and energy efficient use in industry and society.

Duties
As a Ph.D. student, you will work for a doctoral degree as the final goal, according to the goals specified in the Higher Education Ordinance. In parallel with your thesis work, you will also undertake courses during your research education.

Your Ph.D. project is a part of an ongoing project funded by the Swedish Energy Agency. The overall objective of your research is to reduce the production costs of fast pyrolysis bio-oil (FPBO) from forest residues through increased liquid yield and quality using efficient ash related management concepts.  This can enable the use of feedstocks of lower grades, thus broadening the feedstock base, and reduce the production costs, thereby increasing the implementation of FPBO in the biofuel production chain. The specific objectives of your research are to 1) determine the ash layer formation process and resulting characteristics of the heat carrier (bed particles) in fast pyrolysis of biomass, 2) determine how the bed particle layer characteristics influence the FPBO yield and quality, and 3) develop efficient countermeasures, i.e., ash related management concepts, to avoid or suppress the undesired catalytic activation of the heat carrier.

You will do pyrolysis experiments in lab-, and pilot plants and characterize the produced bed particle layers and the FPBO with different chemical- and physical, analytical methods. In your research, you will collaborate with researchers from Luleå University of Technology, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH), Technical University in Wien/BEST, and the technology owner BTG/BTG-BTL.

A doctoral student's main responsibility is to pursue doctoral studies with the aim to successfully defend a doctoral dissertation.

Qualifications
In order to be eligible you must have a degree of Master of Science in chemical engineering, material science, applied physics, or similar specializations and a strong interest in thermochemical processes. You should be a good team player and have the ability to take initiative. You should also have good knowledge of the English language and good oral and written proficiency. Experiences in high-temperature chemistry and thermochemical conversion are considered as advantages.
