Department

The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC) wishes to recruit a Research Associate from January 2021. Based in the Department of Chemistry, CIEC is a unique industry-education centre, recognised for its expertise in creating and maintaining a diverse range of initiatives to inspire pupils and teachers about science and its vital importance to our UK manufacturing base. The Centre has an established reputation for delivery of high quality continuing professional development to enhance science education and improve mutual understanding between industry and schools.

You will build upon research previously carried out into the impact of CIEC’s Children Challenging Industry programme on children’s and teachers’ attitudes towards science and STEM careers.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful departments at York and we are renowned internationally for our research. Role
  • To conduct individual and collaborative research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research, especially the impact of the Children Challenging Industry programme on children’s and teachers’ attitudes towards science and STEM careers. Duties to include:
    • collection, analysis and interpretation of research
    • carrying out appropriate processes to gain ethical approval for new and modified research projects,
    • use of appropriate research techniques and methods and assisting with the design of research instruments;
    • To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of project proposals
    • To write up research results and disseminate them
    • To provide guidance to other staff and external partners, as required
    • To undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities including site and school visits and the development of promotional or educational material
      • To liaise with industrial and school partners

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
  • A degree in science education or similar and a PhD in educational research
  • Knowledge and experience in science education to carry out research and a range of research techniques and methodologies including those used to gather data on school students’ views of STEM subjects
  • Highly developed communication skills and competency to make presentations
  • Ability and experience to write up research work for publication and develop research objectives, projects and proposals
  • Ability to identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds
  • Ability and experience to design research instruments and gather data from school age pupils
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative
  • Experience of liaising with a range of external groups
  • Attention to detail, a positive attitude and a commitment to high quality
  • Commitment to and understanding of Equality and Diversity Issues
  • A collaborative ethos, and the ability to plan and prioritise their own work in order to meet deadlines
