Join us to earn a PhD that will enhance your research capabilities and help you shape your discipline.

Under the auspices of the North West Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) we offer 3-year PhD studentships in Business & Management, with PhD programmes in the following areas:

  • Management (Entrepreneurship and Strategy)
  • Management (Organisation, Work and Technology)
  • Management Science
  • Marketing

Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) is part of the ESRC’s North West Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) together with the universities of Liverpool, Manchester and Keele. Through this consortium, we offer ESRC-funded PhDs for UK, EU and Overseas students wishing to study on one of the above doctoral programmes. You will need to have been offered a place on one of these before being put forward for ESRC studentship funding.

We are looking for highly motivated doctoral candidates who have an excellent first degree and outstanding Masters level degree performance. Qualifications should be in a related discipline to your intended PhD studies. Full-time studentships will commence in October 2021 for research proposals that align with the research interests of the relevant department and that will enhance the research reputation of the School. All studentships pay a generous living allowance and offer a fee waiver for three years.

LUMS is a quadruple-accredited, world-ranked management school, consistently among the UK’s top ten and with a reputation for research of outstanding quality. The School is the most research-intensive business school in the UK, with 80% of research output considered world-leading or internationally excellent (according to the latest Research Excellence Framework, REF 2014). Our commitment to high-quality doctoral research is demonstrated by the fact that we have more than 190 doctoral researchers from all over the world – and PhD graduates from LUMS have obtained academic, research and consultancy positions in quality institutions around the globe. Our PhD Business & Management pathway programmes offer advanced research training courses, high quality supervision by internationally-recognised academics, and participation in the School’s wider research community to make your PhD experience challenging and rewarding.

We also hope to offer a small number of internally funded LUMS studentships, which will be open to applicants of any nationality interested in any of the four programmes within the pathway. Successful applicants will be expected to undertake some teaching duties as part of the studentship responsibilities. The scholarships cover tuition fees, and include a maintenance allowance of approximately £15,000 pa.
