Job description

The Free University of Brussels is recruiting a high-level teacher-researcher in the full-time academic staff of the Faculty of Medicine as of 1st   October 2021.  The teachings associated with the position are in the field of cellular and molecular biology and are intended for bachelor students in Medical,  Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences.

Research area:  Research activities will need to be in the biomedical field.

Educational and scientific objectives:

1. Educational goals:

At the end of the course, the learner will be able to describe the structure of the main organelles of an eukaryotic cell. It will also be able to list and describe the different functions of each of these organelles and cite the gene and protein classes involved in these functions and their respective roles. It will be able to establish the functional link between certain genetic alterations, the cellular mechanisms impacted and the pathological consequences for the body.

Cell and molecular biology are 2 defined learning activities in this course unit.

The teacher will have to work on identifying possible redundancies in the courses.

Content:

  • Cell biology:
  • Cell biology techniques and organisms models Biological membranes and cell compartments - Sorting and protein traffic - The cytoskeleton - Cell division - Extracellular matrix and intercellular contacts - Mitochondria - Developmental Cell Biology Elements.
  • Molecular biology:
  • Nucleic Acids Structure of Genes and Genomes - Organization of Chromatin - Gene Expression Transcription and Control, Methylation - Transcribed Maturation, Splicing and Editing - Mechanisms of Small NRA Regulation - DNA Replication and Repair - Elements of Molecular Biology Techniques: Cloning, Restrictions, recombinant DNA, PCR, Libraries, Expression systems, Genetically modified animals.

Tumorigenesis :

Receptor families and signaling cascades - Cell Cycle Control - Molecular Mechanisms of Apoptosis - Molecular Bases of Oncogenesis - Tumor Progression – Oncogenes and Tumor Suppressor Genes - Stem Cells, Angiogenesis and Tumor Microenvironment - Targeted Therapeutics.

2. Scientific objectives:

The candidate must hold a doctoral thesis. He/she will be able to promote a list of high-level publications in a field of biomedical sciences.  He/she will preferably be able to demonstrate his or her ability to obtain research credits competitively from selective organizations.

The University's Faculty of Medicine, located on the Erasmus campus on the southern edge of Brussels, brings together various research groups active in various fields of medical and biomedical sciences (cancer, neuroscience, stem cells, development, diabetes, metabolism, immunology, microbiology, cardiovascular physiology and reproduction...). The activities of these groups can be accessed from the University's website(http://cvchercheurs.ulb.ac.be/Site/repertoire.php). The campus also has various technology platforms in genomics, cell sorting, confocal microscopy and transgenesis, as well as a pet shop.

The selected candidate will need to develop his or her research activities within one of the research laboratories of the Erasmus Campus, so that the environment best corresponds to the planned research project. Pre-screening of candidates with the laboratories concerned is strongly advised.

Course taken back into the charge at the time of recruitment:

  • BIOL-G2201 (48h Th) - Cell and MolecularBiology (MEDI)

Mandatory bloc 2

  • BMOL-G-2207 (20h Th)  - Pathological Biochemistry  -  partim Tumorigenesis (MEDI)

Mandatory bloc 2
