A 3-year full-time PhD studentship is available at the Department of Psychology at Durham University, UK, to start in October 2021, or possibly earlier. The successful candidate will join the project NewSense led by Prof Marko Nardini and funded by the European Research Council. The studentship will combine behavioural, modelling and neuroimaging methods to investigate people’s abilities to learn to use new sensory signals to improve their perceptual and motor skills. The studentship covers UK/EU or International tuition fees, a tax-free annual stipend at the RCUK rate (currently £15,285), and generous research expenses.

Who is eligible

Essential criteria

  • Have (or expect to obtain) an academic qualification (BSc/MSc or equivalent) in a scientific discipline related to experimental psychology, at least at a UK Upper Second (2.1) standard.
  • Experience in collecting, analysing, and reporting quantitative data on human perception or cognition
  • Excellent written and oral expression
  • Technical competence and ability to learn to use new equipment and software
  • Ability to plan and design novel experimental protocols and analyses
  • Aptitude for recruiting and working with participants in challenging or long-term training protocols

Desirable criteria

  • An outstanding academic track-record as evidenced e.g. by high grades, prizes, career-stage-appropriate conference presentations or publications
  • Experience in research involving psychophysics, multisensory perception, perception and action, perceptual learning, follow-up protocols, model-based analyses, biomechanics, virtual reality, motion capture, or fMRI
