WORKING HOURS: 2-year fixed term contract, 35 hours per week, open to flexible working.

LOCATION: Currently remote working. In usual circumstances London SW1P.

SALARY: up to £35,000 per annum, generous pension, 30 days holiday plus bank holidays.

NIESR is a member of the core team directing The Productivity Institute (TPI), which is hosted at the Alliance Manchester Business School and which is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of its largest single investment into social sciences research. The Productivity Institute’s mission is to help policy and business leaders across the UK understand how to improve productivity and living standards in a context of Brexit and recovery from the impact of Covid-19.

The Institute is developing a research agenda and a series of practical business interventions through a programme of regional engagement with policymakers and business leaders from firms of all sizes as well as bodies such as HM Treasury, BEIS and the CBI. It will create eight Regional Productivity Fora across the country to work with policy makers on critical productivity issues in the regional context and it will form a National Productivity Council to work with policy makers on productivity aspects of nation-wide policies.

NIESR is co-hosting the theme on macroeconomics, under the direction of Jagjit Chadha, NIESR’s Director.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the team at NIESR and also the broader TPI. The purpose of the role is to conduct research in the field of macroeconomics and productivity, as well as contribute to collaborative research and policy work. The successful candidate will develop their own research agenda and will aim to publish high-quality research as well as co-author publications in internationally leading journals. They are also expected to help with research-based policy work by preparing background information and organising policy-focused events.

The essential requirements that we are looking for in the successful candidate are:

Experience

PhD in economics or another relevant social science, or equivalent qualification or experience.
Experience in modern macroeconomic quantitative techniques.
Experience of drafting research papers as well as complex reports/policy proposals with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Experience with working collaboratively across teams, institutions or organisations to achieve specific outcomes.
A promising academic record with previous experience of writing academic journals to submit for publication.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

High degree of self-motivation and ability to work under pressure while maintaining accuracy.

Effective project and time management skills, including timely recording and reporting and the ability to prioritise multiple conflicting tasks to meet strict deadlines.

Ability to work independently.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication style to present complex information and ideas to a variety of audiences, including academics, the media and the general public.

Knowledge of standard software packages, particularly MATLAB, LATEX and standard data analysis packages.

Strong interest in real world economic and policy developments.
