Department of Plant & Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering one PhD scholarship in plant developmental biology commencing 01.04.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment

The laboratory of Stephan Wenkel at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PLEN), University of Copenhagen, Denmark investigates the function of microProteins in model and crop plants (https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/plant_biochemistry/plant-development/ ) and is located at the Copenhagen Plant Science Centre (www.cpsc.ku.dk ). PLEN and CPSC constitute a stimulating and international research environment with state-of-the-art facilities.

Project description
We are recruiting one PhD student to work on a three-year project aimed at identifying novel microProteins that regulate shade avoidance responses in plants. MicroProteins are small single-domain proteins that have been shown to control diverse biological pathways. In the project we will employ a combination of transcriptome-sequencing, genome-engineering and protein biochemistry approaches in Arabidopsis and tomato plants to unravel the function of new microProteins.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with an MSc in biology or related discipline. The ideal applicant has experience in working with plants and thrives in an international working environment. Knowledge in genome-engineering and/or protein biochemistry is a plus.

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

To manage and carry out your research project
Attend PhD courses
Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
Participate in teaching
Disseminate your research
To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
Work for the department

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Biology or Biotechnology with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 331,125 (approx. €43,750) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 53,811). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
