Applications are invited for a 4-year EPSRC Industrial CASE PhD studentship in the group led by Dr Robert Phipps. The project, co-funded by AstraZeneca, will involve the development of new synthetic methods aimed at controlling enantioselectivity in chemical reactions involving radicals. The strategy used will be to design and develop catalysts that operate by the use of non-covalent interactions with the substrate. We have previously developed an enantioselective variant of the Minisci reaction (Science 2018, 360, 419 and J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2019, 141, 19178) and are currently working on applying related strategies to various other types of radical reaction.
Applicants must have (or expect to obtain) at least the equivalent of a UK upper second-class Master's degree in chemistry. Practical experience of synthetic organic chemistry in a research environment would be beneficial.
The studentship will commence in October 2021 and will provide a maintenance grant and tuition fees at the UK rate. Non-UK applicants will be considered only if they qualify for the UK fees rate or are able to fund the overseas fees differential.
To apply, please email a cover letter, CV, detailed academic transcripts and the contact details for at least two academic referees to: Dr Robert Phipps (email: rjp71@cam.ac.uk ). Your cover letter should explain why you wish to be considered for the studentship and describe the qualities and experience you would bring to the role.
