The Department of Integrative Medical Biology at Umeå University is searching for a Post doc position in advanced microscopy and cell biology for studies of membrane and lipid homeostasis in cellular model systems. The position is on full time for two year. You are welcome with your application at latest Januari 31 2021.

Description of the research project and methodology:
Regulation of lipid homeostasis and maintanance of membrane integrity is key for all cells. Yet, the mechanisms for sensing and control of lipid storage and membrane dynamics remains elusive. This project aims to study protein complexes that recognize the levels, and control the internalization and storage of free fatty acids in cells. Furthermore, the project seeks to understand how the levels of individual membrane lipids influence membrane bending and the generation of membrane vesicles. Special focus is given to analysis of protein interactions and dynamics of lipid trafficking and storage using advanced live cell fluorescent microscopy, mass spectrometry and correlative approaches. Interactions will be studied in living cells using fluorescent lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). As model systems, we use specifically designed cell-lines and 3D-organoids where key proteins are tagged with fluorescent markers. The gained mechanistic understanding of lipid turnover and storage will be instrumental to our understanding of lipid homeostasis in cells and how this relates to diseases such as obesity and cancer.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to explore your research project in a scientific environment including several research groups with extensive experience in biochemistry, cellbiology and imaging. The Biochemical Imaging Centre at Umeå University. (https://www.umu.se/en/research/infrastructure/biochemical-imaging-centre-umea-bicu/), Umeå Core facility for Electron Microscopy (https://www.umu.se/forskning/infrastruktur/umea-core-facility-for-electron-microscopy-ucem/), Swedish metabolomics centre (https://www.umu.se/forskning/infrastruktur/metabolomics/), as well as other UmU facilities will be accessible as part of this project. Qualifications
Eligible to apply are individuals with a PhD in the relevant area, and priority will be given to applicants who graduated within three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the position may be offered to a candidate who has completed the doctorate earlier. Qualified applicants should have a documented experience in one, or several, fields related to the project such as; cell biology, protein and lipid biochemistry/interactions, advanced light microscopy, electron microscopy and image analysis. Strong experimental skills, as well as good knowledge of project planning, are considered as additional merits. Candidates must be able to carry out independent scientific research work, and to write scientific reports and manuscripts. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. In the selection process emphasis will also be placed on a genuine enthusiasm for the research area and methodology, personal suitability, organizational skills, and ability to work collaborative with other lab members, facility staff and collaborators.

Application
Applicants have to apply using our E-recruitment system Varbi and must be received by 2020-01-31 at the latest.

The application should include:

  • A brief cover letter (about one page) that describes the applicants research experience, research interests, and suitability for the project.
  • Curriculum vitae including information about academic degrees (with verifications), technical expertise, employments, list of publications, and names and contact information for two references.

  • A brief project description (max two A4 pages) outlining of how the applicant would like to approach the project, given the information described in the announcement.
