Your Role

The successful candidate will join a young, strong and motivated SpaceR research group focused on increasing the autonomy of aerial, planetary and orbital robotics for on-earth applications, space exploration, on-orbit servicing and manufacturing and space resource utilization. This innovative research group is lead by Prof. Miguel Olivares-Mendez.

She/He will contribute to an ESA project in the Mechatronic design, development and control of a robotic puller system for an space manufacturing system. The candidate is demanded to perform the following tasks:


  • Mechanical and electrical design of a robotic fine manipulation system for pulling Spacefiber.

  • Sensor selection (force, position, and temperature), data processing and control for the robotic fine manipulation system.

  • Design automation strategies for the Robotic Pulling system.

  • Manufacturing of the Robotic Pulling system.

  • Conduct functionality tests using the Zero-G lab facility.

  • Software and hardware integration, verification, and testing.

  • Providing support in setting up and running experiments in the SnT Zero-G Lab facility.

  • Cooperate with other projects and colleagues at SpaceR.

  • Participating in project deliverables

  • Disseminating results through scientific publications and conference presentations

  • Assisting in the organization of relevant workshops and demos

  • Assisting in PhD co-supervision

  • Experience on Micro-gravity and/or vacumm chamber laboratories with be an asset

Your Profile

Qualification: The candidate should possess a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or affine.


  • Have a strong background in robotics, mechanical and electronic designs and development.

  • Strong capabilities with design tools.

  • Strong programming skills in C/C++, Python and ROS;

  • Proved experience working on industrial research and innovation projects and/or working in industry.

  • Proved experience working on ESA, EU or international projects.

  • Enthusiasm for scientific issues and scientific working methods;

  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Commitment, team working and a critical mind

Language Skills: Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
