Description

This bursary supports students studying in the Faculty of Medicine by providing funding to present their research at a scientific conference.

It was established in 1972 and is maintained by an endowment from the estate of the late Randall Gilbert Silcock. This award was recognised by the UQ Senate in 2015.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must: 

  • submit an application to the Dean by the closing date for applications
  • be enrolled in the Approved Program.

How to apply

Student applications are considered twice a year in two rounds.

  • Round 1 will consider applications received between the 16 March and 27 April.
  • Round 2 will consider applications received between the 14 September and 26 October.

To apply, email the following information to med.prizes@uq.edu.au: 

  • all details of the Conference: full title of conference, dates, venue, city, state, country
  • proof of abstract acceptance or invitation to present at the conference: email or letter
  • details of student: UQ ID number; full name; year of MD/MBBS study; HDR candidate: yes/no; current GPA
  • research supervisors full name and affiliation
  • title of presentation
  • type of presentation: poster or oral
  • presentation abstract as accepted
  • statement of the tangible benefits that may be expected from presenting at this conference
  • budget of funds requested for conference registration and/or travel costs only. No accommodation costs will be considered.

Please note that this bursary is available retrospectively if the student can provide evidence that the paper was accepted and the conference was attended in the year of award.

Selection criteria

The Bursary is awarded, at the discretion of the Dean, to the applicant(s) showing greatest merit as demonstrated by: 

  1. the quality and prestige of the conference to be attended
  2. the quality of the student’s presentation based on the accepted abstract
  3. the statement by the student on the tangible benefits that may be expected from presenting at this conference.
