Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance. There is then potential for this to be extended for a further 6 months. It is hoped that the candidate would be in post by 1st October 2021.

The Theory of Condensed Matter Group of the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, invites applications for a Research Assistant/Associate to work in the general area of frustrated magnetic materials. The role is funded by EPSRC.

The role holder will engage in theoretical research in the group of Prof. Claudio Castelnovo, with the specific aim to investigate the role of disorder in frustrated magnetism, encompassing both classical and quantum spin liquids. Areas of related interest include (but are not limited to) many-body localisation, far-from-equilibrium systems, emergent symmetries and topological phases of matter, strongly correlated materials. This theoretical work is part of an ongoing collaboration with experimental groups at Royal Holloway and Cambridge.

The successful candidate will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Physics, with a track record in the study of strongly correlated many body systems. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the study of (frustrated) magnetic systems; systems out of equilibrium; localisation phenomena and disordered systems as demonstrated by publications in major journals. A solid understanding of condensed matter techniques (e.g., mean field; field theory) and simulations (e.g., exact diagonalisation, classical Monte Carlo) will be highly beneficial.

The post holder will be located at the Department of Physics Cavendish Laboratory JJ Thomson Avenue Cambridge CB3 0HE, UK.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,715 to £30,942 Research Associate: £32,816 to £40,322. Appointment at research associate is dependent on having a PhD including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD (in which case appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded).

Ensure that you upload your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a covering letter in the upload section of the online application. If you upload any additional documents which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application. Please submit your application by midnight on the closing date.
