PhD position

The Faculty of Humanities (HF) has a four-year PhD position in the field of English, foreign language or philosophy. This PhD position will be linked to either the Department of Foreign Languages (IF) or the Department of Philosophy (FOF). The candidate accepting the offer of employment must be able to start in the position within six months of receiving the offer.


About the project/work tasks:

This position is one of two PhD positions awarded to the Faculty at the University of Bergen in connection with the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research’s award of new places on the HF’s teacher education programme during the autumn of 2020. It will constitute part of the Faculty’s commitment to the teacher education.

The doctoral research fellow’s project shall address issues linked to the subjects of English, foreign language or philosophy connected to teacher education. These issues could be based on research history, bildung theory, methodological issues or the objectives, content and justification of teaching. Projects relating to school research may also be relevant.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the research group they wish to collaborate with and draw up a draft project (max. 5 pages) in accordance with the guidelines provided by the research group in question. Please see under General Information for contact details. 


Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian master’s degree or the equivalent in English, foreign language or philosophy. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded at the time of application. Master’s degrees from other countries will be evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT). The Department can send documentation of foreign education to NOKUT in order to evaluate whether this degree is equivalent to a Norwegian master’s degree.
  • Knowledge of the Teacher Education is an advantage.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently in a well-structured way and have good cooperation skills.
  • The applicant must have good command of the Norwegian language.

In assessing the applications, both the academic quality of the project and the applicant’s qualification will be considered.

In cases where ranked applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications, strategic considerations, motivation and the applicant’s personal eligibility will be taken into account.


About the PhD position:

The main purpose of the PhD position is to complete a doctoral degree, which qualifies for independent research and for other forms of employment that demand specific competency. The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, of which 25 % of the time comprises obligatory duties associated with teaching, dissemination of results, and administration. The plan for this part of the position is developed in collaboration with the Department at the very beginning of the employment period.

Applicants who have already held a PhD position at the University of Bergen, are not eligible for employment.

The PhD position demands that the applicant has his or her regular workplace at the University of Bergen, and comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.

About the research tra

The PhD candidate must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. It is a condition that the applicant satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD program at the University of Bergen.
