Description

Dr Robert Dalley-Scarlett

Dr Robert Dalley-Scarlett (1887-1959) became the youngest Cathedral organist at the time when he was appointed organist and choir-master of Grafton Cathedral at the age of 25 before moving to Brisbane in 1919 after serving in the First World War.

Robert was Director of Queensland University Choral Society from 1920 to 1930 and organised the southern hemisphere's first Bach Festival, later founding the Brisbane Bach and Handel Societies. He directed the ABC's Brisbane Singers and was also chief Music Critic for the Courier Mail.

More information about Robert is available in the Australian Dictionary of Biography

The prize was established in 1962 as a memorial to Robert by a gift of $4,000 by Mrs Dalley-Scarlett and the public subscription of a sum of approximately $3,400. Additional gifts of $2,600 and $10,000 were received from Mrs Dalley-Scarlett in 1981 and 1991 respectively.
