The LUT School of Energy Systems (LES) is the largest university-level energy research and education community in Finland. Research at LES is strongly systems-based, involving the entire energy value chain from fuels and resources through generation, transmission and distribution to the use of energy, including technologies, devices, market design, business models, policies, resource efficiency and sustainability. The Laboratory of Electricity Markets and Power Systems within LES and its Department of Electrical Engineering focuses on both technology and business solutions of smart grids.

The junior researcher position is situated in the Laboratory of Electricity Markets and Power Systems of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the LUT School of Energy Systems in Lappeenranta, Finland. However, this interdisciplinary research work will be carried out in collaboration with other research teams.

The junior researcher will prepare a doctoral thesis on prosumer decision-making in a carbon-neutral energy system. The dissertation will study the interactions and relevance between prosumer decision-making and energy system impacts. This multi-faced interdisciplinary research will be addressed with both quantitative and qualitative research methods to be further specified in a research plan.

Applicants must have a higher university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. electrical engineering or energy technology) and the ability to complete the doctoral degree within the normative duration of the studies (four years). The junior researcher is expected to prepare a postgraduate study and research plan together with his/her supervisor and obtain the doctoral study right within one year of the start of the employment relationship.

This doctoral dissertation research will be carried out in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano. Hence, the junior researcher is expected to spend about 40% of the time in Milan (six months per year, during second to fourth years). In addition, as the research work is expected to include questionnaires and interviews with energy end users, fluency in Finnish or Italian in addition to English is a significant advantage. The junior researcher should be highly motivated, creative and able to work in a multidisciplinary research team.

The employment relationship is fixed-term with a six-month trial period. The position will start with a one-year term that can be extended for another three years, provided that the research has progressed satisfactorily.

The deadline for applications is 28 February 2021 at midnight, Finnish local time (UTC +2 h). Please fill out the online application form and attach the following:

The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The work will start in April 2021 (negotiable).
