The Faculty of Science and the Leiden Institute of Chemistry are looking for a

Postdoctoral researcher in solution-state bioNMR spectroscopy at the uNMR-NL facility

Project description
We are inviting applications for the position of a postdoctoral researcher in solution-state bioNMR for the Dutch National uNMR-NL facility.

You will be responsible for the implementation and development of state-of-the-art solution-state bioNMR methodology at the high-field systems of uNMR-NL, including the 1.2 GHz spectrometer (to be installed at Utrecht University in early 2021) and the 950 MHz spectrometer (Radboud University Nijmegen), as well as the other high-field bioNMR spectrometers available at the NMR facility of Leiden Institute of Chemistry and the other uNMR facilities. While based in Leiden, you will be in regular contact with, and work at the Utrecht and Nijmegen sites. Your research will involve applications in the life sciences, with an emphasis on structural and dynamics studies of proteins, including high-molecular-weight complexes and paramagnetic NMR approaches. Further collaborations with other academic and industrial partners are possible.

Selection criteria
You should hold a PhD in a NMR-related field with practical experience and interest in implementing state-of-the-art solution-state bioNMR methods on high-field instruments. Excellent communication skills in English are required.

Our organisation
The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. Our people are driven by curiosity to expand fundamental knowledge and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline. The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is diverse, ranging from mathematics, artificial intelligence, computer science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2,300 staff and almost 5,000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together. For more information, see the website of the Faculty of Science.

The chemistry and life science research in the Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC) is organized around two major research areas: ‘Chemical Biology’ and ‘Energy & Sustainability’. The institute’s research themes illustrate the central position of chemistry between biology, medicine and physics. The various research topics carried out within these themes are ideal for executing interdisciplinary research.

Your position will be embedded in the Macromolecular Biochemistry group at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry. The Institute houses seven NMR spectrometers, including 600 and 850 MHz bioNMR spectrometers. Topics studied in the group include enzyme structure-dynamics-function relationships, protein-DNA interactions and paramagnetic NMR method development. The Utrecht site focusses on structure and dynamics of various chromatin systems. The Nijmegen site focusses on methodological developments aimed at improving the NMR sensitivity in the analysis of complex mixtures (biofluids, natural extracts, reaction mixtures). The uNMR-NL consortium is funded by the NWO program “National Roadmap for Large-Scale Research Facilities” and provides access to ultra-high field NMR instrumentation. Its core partners are four universities (UULUWUR and RU) together with the public-private organisation COAST. Associate partners develop and apply high-field medical imaging at the four medical centers (LUMCUMCUAMCRUMC). Research within uNMR-NL is flanked by the NMARRS educational program.

Terms and conditions
We offer a position for initially one year. After a positive evaluation of the progress of the research, personal capabilities, and compatibility, the appointment will be extended by a further year. Salary range from € 3,353.- to € 4,402.- gross per month (pay scale 10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3%), training and career development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. For international spouses we have set up a dual career programme. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.

Diversity
Leiden University is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from members of underrepresented groups.
