The University of Oulu is one of the largest universities in Finland, with approximately 15 000 students and 3 000 employees. We, at the University of Oulu, work as part of the international science community to produce new scientific information and science-based solutions. Our university's several specialized research and service units enable extensive and diverse development and career opportunities for experts in various fields.

The host research team also belongs to Kvantum of Oulu which offers a high-level international multidisciplinary environment supplied with cutting-edge infrastructures.

We have now an opening for a Doctoral Student position in research project: Fall and rise of endangered species: Detection of genomic and population ecological signals of decreasing and increasing populations (Laura Kvist, Jouni Aspi, Mikko Sillanpää). The position is filled for a maximum of four-year period.

We are looking for a talented and motivated candidate to develop a spatio-temporal model to combine population ecological and genomic parameters for estimation of population viability in endangered species. This is a part of a project that studies population genomic and ecological parameters and their connection in population size changes.

The doctoral student for spatio-temporal modeling will be placed in the Research Unit of Mathematical Sciences and will be supervised mainly by Prof.  Mikko Sillanpää. However, this multidisciplinary work is done in close collaboration with Doc. Laura Kvist and Prof Jouni Aspi as well as the other researchers of their research group of Wildlife Genomics (https://www.oulu.fi/wildlifegenomics/) at the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit. The research group of Prof Mikko J. Sillanpää (http://cc.oulu.fi/~misillan/) is developing new computationally efficient and practical statistical methods and their applications in biology, medicine and other fields. Bayesian analysis and data analytic methods using hierarchical models and Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling methods are preferred in the group. The Wildlife Genomics research group is focusing broadly on evolutionary, ecological and conservation genetics/genomics, molecular ecology and landscape genetics and phylogeography. Current research includes, e.g. usage of ancient DNA, studying animal domestication, and investigating genetic effects of post-glacial recolonization processes and habitat fragmentation. We collaborate closely with many other research groups, both nationally and internationally.

The employment begins on 1 March 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. A six-month trial period is applied in the position.

Requirements

What we offer

Salary

The salary is at the beginning set on levels 2 or 3 depending on earlier experience, and later on levels 3 – 4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a supplementary remuneration is given for personal achievement and performance (max. 50 %). In practice, the salary is roughly 2300 – 2700 € per month for an early stage researcher, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and progress of the doctoral thesis.

Application

Applications must be submitted using the electronic application form by February 28th, 2021 (23:59 Finnish local time, EET), with the following attachments as three separate pdf files:
