The Leibniz-Institute DSMZ-German Collection Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH, Braunschweig offers the position of a

Postdoctoral research associate (m/f/d)

Biodiversity informatics

in the Department Bioinformatics (Dr. Boyke Bunk). The appointment will initially be limited for 2 years with a salary level according to TV-L 13, but is open for extension. The position is offered as full time (39,8 hours per week) and is not appropriate for part time work.

The Leibniz Institute DSMZ is one of the largest bioresource centers in the world. The institute is equipped with state-of-the art instrumentation for microbiological, chemical, and molecular work including an own next-generation sequencing, metabolomics, and bioinformatics core facility.

For molecular microbial diversity research long and short read sequencing platforms (PacBio Sequel IIe, Illumina NextSeq 2000) are available. The core tasks of the advertised position includes the quantitative, taxonomic and functional exploration of microbial diversity on the basis of metagenome and metatranscriptome data, but also of 16S/ITS amplicons. In terms of bioinformatics, your task is to accompany the transition from previously short read-dominated metagenome studies to long read approaches. Accordingly, innovative analysis pipelines have to be developed and ongoing project work to be supported. A dedicated HPC server environment (> 2,000 CPU cores, 4.5 PB central storage) is available for your activities.

Key qualifications for employment are in-depth knowledge of NGS data (Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore) and of basic sequence analysis software (QC, filtering, trimming procedures). Proven experience in the area of metagenome assembly (e.g. MEGAHIT, IDBA, metaSPAdes) and metagenomic binning (MaxBin2, MetaBAT, etc.) is needed. With regard to 16S (amplicon) analyses, knowledge of the common diversity analysis software (QIIME, MEGA, ARB, etc.) and of the respective databases (NCBI, SILVA, RDP, Greengenes, UNITE) is required. Furthermore, extensive knowledge of at least one programming language (Python, Java, C, Perl), as well as a proficient handling of Linux and the command line, are required skills. Finally, the proficient handling of data from the central sequence repositories and archives is expected. Experience in dealing with HPC environments such as SLURM as well as dealing with the statistical software R is helpful.

The institutes of the Leibniz Association strive to increase the proportion of female scientists. Disabled applicants with identical qualification will be preferentially selected. The DSMZ is an equal opportunity employer, supports balanced work-life career development, and holds the certificate of the audit berufundfamilie®.
