The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science at the University of Jyväskylä is currently seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of

ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN MATHEMATICS, INVERSE PROBLEMS

The position starts in June 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Assistant Professor position is for a fixed term of three to five years and the Associate Professor for a fixed term of five years.

The mathematics of inverse problems is positioned in the middle ground between mathematical analysis, geometry, and applied mathematics, allowing the utilization of mathematical methods in a number of current applications. The research of inverse problems  at the department began in 2012  it is expanding the traditional focus areas of the department in new and fertile directions. The research is part of a multidisciplinary center of excellence in inversion modeling and imaging with several spinoff companies and industry connections, contributing to the department's students' career paths.

The Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Modelling and Imaging (2012-2025) operating at the department has raised the profile of Finnish inverse research to a significant position in the international research community. 

Qualifications we are looking for

Responsibilities of the assistant / associate professor include research and teaching related to his/her own research area. The person appointed to the position is expected to carry out internationally high-level research in the mathematics of inverse problems. Primarily, we are looking for a person, whose field of research is broadly related to the mathematics research currently conducted at the department.

The teaching responsibilities include lectures and other courses from basic to advanced level, related to the department of mathematics and statistics. The responsibilities also include the continuous development of teaching as well as administrative duties. Additional tasks include advising students and supervising theses at the bachelor, master and post graduate levels as well as obtaining external funding, which is used to supervise doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing international networks, and acquisition of external funding and teaching. Collaboration and networking with the industry is considered advantageous. A position of assistant professor is defined for a fixed-term of three to five years and a position of associate professor is defined for a fixed-term of five years, (according to the tenure track model).  At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotion.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees.
