The Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics group at the Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands, http://www.phys.tue.nl/psn) has an open postdoctoral position in the field of fiber sensing

Goal and background

Optical fibers are increasingly used for sensing, as they allow gathering information from environments which are far or difficult to reach (from industrial processing systems to human arteries). Fiber sensors are compact, minimally-invasive and potentially inexpensive. However, their application has so far mostly been limited to temperature and pressure/strain sensing. By building a sensor on the tip of the fiber and properly functionalizing it, it is possible to sense all physical, chemical and biological properties of the environment, turning the fiber into a powerful sensing instrument – a “lab-on-a-fiber”. Our group has recently demonstrated a method to fabricate sensors on a semiconductor wafer and transfer them on a fiber tip. This allows harnessing the power of nanophotonics to build complex sensing structures on fiber tips and opens the way to a new generation of fiber sensors. In this project we intend to bring fiber-tip sensors to the next level by combining advanced sensing approaches with optimized read-out methods, enabling their practical application in industrial sensing environments.

Project description

The selected candidate will perform applied research in optical sensing. He/she will collaborate with two PhD students on the design and characterization of fiber-tip sensors, investigate the use of integrated interrogators for the read-out of the sensor, and demonstrate its application in a number of relevant sensing problems. The project will be carried out at the Eindhoven University of Technology, under the supervision of prof. dr. A. Fiore, Dep. Applied Physics, in close collaboration with a team of young researchers and with industrial partners active in the field of industrial sensing. The postdoctoral appointment will initially be for a period of one year, with a possible extension for a second year. Opportunities for setting up a spin-off company to commercialize the technology will also be investigated. The Eindhoven region and its PhotonDelta ecosystem also offer ample opportunities for developing a R&D career in photonics, within large companies such as ASML and Philips or fast-growing spin-offs.

Requirements

We invite applications from candidates with a recent PhD degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering and an experimental background in optics or photonics. Candidates must prove a strong attitude towards experimental work and team working, as well as the drive and capacity to tackle different aspects of a complex problem with independence. Entrepreneurial attitude and ambitions represent an added value.

Application

Applications can be made through the TU/e website:

Screening of applications will start as soon as applications are received and will continue until the position has been filled.
