Kvantum Institute is one of the four strategic focus institutes supporting high-quality research, coordinating multidisciplinary research activities across Faculty boarders and contributing to doctoral training. Kvantum institute’s science-based expertise meets global challenges in the focus areas of Sustainable materials and systems and Changing climate and northern environment. The Institute promotes interdisciplinary networking of research groups as well as co-operation between groups and national and international partners.

We are now looking for

Research Director

to lead the institute during the coming five year period 2021-2025. This senior level position is a full-time position, but we are also willing to negotiate a part time based solution (minimum 50% time allocation) with a candidate having possibility for a part time work at his/her current research institute. 

The Research Director will lead and manage the operations of the institute and ensure the success of spearhead and emerging projects, promote multi- and interdisciplinary research nationally and internationally, build strategic partnerships and support in acquiring funding. The Research Director will be reporting to the Vice Rector of research at the University of Oulu.

We expect you to be an inspirational science leader capable of creating and implementing a vision on further developing the Kvantum institute, its research and partnerships. We expect you to work together with the other three Focus Institutes but also with our multidisciplinary units and faculties in activities relating to all the University´s focus areas. We also expect you to have good connections to the national and European research institutes and science communities relevant to the focus areas. Furthermore, we expect you to have demonstrated your skills in forming and developing long term strategic partnerships. It is also necessary that you understand national and European funding possibilities and are interested in seeking new funding opportunities and winning research consortiums together with the research groups.

Qualifications

Doctoral degree in technical sciences or natural sciences Proven track record and merits in research Experience in successfully leading research projects Ability to communicate fluently both in Finnish and in English

What we offer

You will be working on strategically and globally significant research area. You will have an opportunity to directly influence the strategy implementation of University of Oulu. Modern research facilities and motivated staff members in 15 different spearhead research projects and 5 emerging projects. Personnel benefits such as occupational healthcare and affordable sport services . A 5-year position, beginning on January 1, 2021. A salary in accordance with the Finnish universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel) demand level 7 – 9 and personal work performance component of maximum of 50% of the job-specific component. A trial period of six months will be applied.
