HZG is one of the 19 national institutions of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres e.V. (HGF). At the Institute of Materials Research some 200 scientists conduct research in the five sub-institutes "Materials Mechanics", "Materials Physics", "Materials Technology", "Magnesium Innovation Centre MagIC" and "Metallic Biomaterials".

The Institute of Surface Science of Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is looking to fill the position of a PhD student (m/f/d) in computational engineering for EU project VIPCOAT - Virtual Open Innovation Platform for Active Protective Coatings Guided by Modelling and Optimization. The position is limited for three years.


Your tasks
  • development of data-driven models for advanced surface protection technologies
  • generation and assessment of relevant input features using quantum chemical software packages and chemoinformatics toolkits
  • prediction of the outcome of computationally expensive simulations by utilizing machine learning approaches
  • creation of a modelling workflow that facilitates selection of effective corrosion inhibitors in strong interaction and close collaboration with experimentalists of the project partners
  • analysis of simulation results and contribution to physics-based models, design of experiment and optimization of protective coating performance
  • active collaboration and exchange with industrial software developers and coatings manufacturers
  • publication and presentation of your scientific results in consortia meetings, scientific journals as well as at international conferences, project related focused workshops and trainings
  • contribution to project documentation

Your profile
  • master's degree in Computational Chemistry, Data Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or Applied Mathematics
  • experience in the implementation of machine learning algorithms
  • experiences in utilizing quantum chemical numerical software packages (e.g Gaussian, VASP, TURBOMOLE).
  • excellent knowledge of relevant theoretical foundations (materials science, machine learning, chemistry, corrosion, coating technologies, informatics)
  • profound programming skills in C++, Python
  • fundamental knowledge of chemoinformatic software packages is a plus (e.g. rdkit)
  • excellent communication skills in English
  • ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists
