The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of infection biology and immunology combined with metabolomics as per 1 May 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a 3 year full-time position.
We offer a vibrant international research environment where English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The Department employs some 450 people and covers a range of research areas within Biomedicine. We contribute to the Bachelor’s degree programs in medicine, molecular medicine, odontology and the Master’s degree programs in biomedical engineering and medical chemistry. Our infrastructure is well developed with modern laboratories, core and animal facilities. About the research project
Virus infections lead to immune activation, modulation of cellular activities, and alteration of metabolism. This leads to destruction of tissues and alteration of homeostatic activities, and hence disease development. Therefore, understanding of the mechanisms that govern alterations in metabolism and deciphering of the impact, will advance the understanding of viral disease mechanisms.
To address these questions, we will map the metabolic alterations that occur in virus-infected organs, and experimentally test key observations for functional impact.
For this purpose, we will use mouse models for virus infections (e.g. herpesvirus infections in the brain, and SARS-CoV2 infection in the lungs) and combine this with untargeted LC-MS based metabolomics analysis (LC-QTOF-MS and LC-MS/MS) , advanced complex data analysis tools, and in vitro model systems. This will allow us to both identify and explore metabolic alterations in virus-infected organs. The project is part of a larger program of mapping cellular transcription, activation stages, and metabolic impact with high temporal and spatial resolution, and to include machine leaning tools to uncover complex patterns in viral diseases.
Your job responsibilities
As Postdoc in infection biology and immunology combined with metabolomics your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance. The work related to the project will take place at both Department of Biomedicine (infection biology and immunology, prof. Søren Riis Paludan and assoc prof. Line Reinert) and Department of Forensic Medicine (metabolomics, prof. Mogens Johannsen), and the successful candidate will be integrated into both departments. Your main tasks will consist of: Independent research of high international quality, including publication.

Your competences
You have academic qualifications at the PhD level, preferably within one or more of the following areas immunology, biochemistry or cell biology, and with strong interest in metabolism. Applicants with previous documented experience with untargeted metabolomics and analysis of complex biological data sets will be preferred. This includes LC-QTOF-MS and LC-MS/MS based metabolomics analysis, metabolic pathway analysis and to lesser extend animal models, and in vitro cell culture systems. You should have solid analytical thinking, creativity, and a visible publication record.
