The PhD Research Fellow will be co-supervised by Profs. Pål Falnes and Kristian Gundersen. Linking the research interests of both groups, in protein methylation (Falnes) and muscle physiology (Gundersen), the project aims at elucidating the molecular mechanisms and biological relevance of posttranslational methylation of muscle proteins, which is extensive but poorly studied. Specifically, the project will study the presence and alterations (e.g. during training or atrophy) of specific protein methylations, and also investigate the responsible (methyltransferase) enzymes. The project has a clear biomedical relevance, especially related to muscle disease and sports medicine.
This research will be performed within the sections for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Falnes group) and Physiology and Cell Biology (Gundersen group). Research areas within the two sections encompass e.g. gene regulation, enzymology, muscle biology, and intracellular transport. Several of our research groups are leaders in their respective fields, with vast networks of national and international collaborators.
