KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
Third-cycle subject: Applied and computational mathematics, specialization mathematical statistics
The Department of Mathematics at the Royal Institute of Technology seeks applications for a Ph.D student position in Applied and Computational Mathematics for a project on convergence in machine learning.
The project will study the convergence behavior of machine learning models, such as deep neural networks and low-rank matrix factorization. Both of these models involve non-convex optimization, so convergence to global minima is not guaranteed, but the resulting methods achieve impressive results on a wide variety of tasks. The project will seek to characterize the properties of these models once converged by combining ideas from algebraic geometry and statistical signal processing. This theoretical analysis will be anchored in concrete problems in computer vision and cryogenic electron microscopy .
