A Research Associate/Fellow position is available with Dr Silvia Maggi and Dr Tobias Bast at the School of Psychology, the University of Nottingham on a project entitled "Learning from reward: an exploratory study to assess dopamine's role in different learning conditions".

This project aims to clarify the role of dopamine in the prefrontal cortex during learning and flexible behaviour. You will be using automated operant tasks to test rat's behaviour during different learning paradigms and in combination with the intra-cerebral microinfusion of dopaminergic drugs. Behavioural data produced by these experiments will be used to estimate behavioural strategies that rats use to adapt after changes in reward conditions and how these strategies are affected by the dopaminergic manipulations.

This project lies at the intersection of Neuropharmacology, Behavioural Neuroscience and Computational Neuroscience. It is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to bridge the gaps between these disciplines and expand your expertise in one or more of these fields. You will be responsible for the behavioural pharmacological studies in rats, including stereotaxic surgery, intra-cerebral microinfusions and behavioural training and testing. You will also have the opportunity to work alongside the Computational Neuroscience groups and learn state-of-the-art computational approaches for the analysis and modelling of animal behaviour.

We are looking for a strong candidate, who has a PhD in neuroscience (or be near completion) and has completed a UK Home Office Personal Licence course for animal experiments and substantial experience in behavioural neuroscience. Experience in performing microinfusion and surgical implantation of canulae in rats is requested. Knowledge about dopaminergic manipulation is a plus. To be successful in this role, you must have a degree in Neuroscience or equivalent and relevant experience in performing in-vivo pharmacological experiments in rodents. 

This position is offered on a part-time basis (18.75hrs/week), fixed-term contract for one year with a start date of 1st March 2021 or soon after.
