The Faculty of Science and the Leiden Institute of Physics invite applications for

Tenure track faculty position in theoretical physics

Project description
The Leiden Institute of Physics  (LION) is searching a new faculty member, to be appointed within the Institute Lorentz for theoretical physics. We are particularly interested in candidates with a focus on theoretical biophysics and complex systems (e.g. cell and tissue mechanics, self-organization in  biological matter, biological and non-biological networks, econophysics etc.) and/or with a unique approach that connects with our research lines in quantum matter and information, particle physics and cosmology. The Lorentz Institute seeks "unity in diversity", and we welcome candidates who can bridge different research paths in theoretical physics.

Leiden University attaches much importance to diversity and in particular welcomes applications from groups which are underrepresented in the institution. Also the Ministry for Education, Culture and Science, which is funding the position, strives for gender balance in tenured positions. To further this goal, in first instance only applications from women will be taken under consideration. Appointments at associate or full professor level may be considered for outstanding candidates.

Our organisation
The mission of the Lorentz Institute, established in 1921, is to promote insight into the wonder that the same physical laws and mathematical concepts apply to the whole of nature, from the largest to the smallest energy and length scales. Our research area covers three different energy scales: At the low end the quantum physics of nanoscale and strongly correlated condensed matter at low temperatures; at the high end the physics of elementary particles and cosmology; at the intermediate energy scale the statistical physics at room temperature of soft condensed matter and biological matter. We strive for the application of abstract theoretical concepts to real-life situations, working closely with the experimental groups within LION.

We are a partner in the Delta Institute of Theoretical Physics, which joins the Universities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Leiden for a comprehensive research and teaching program in theoretical physics. The Lorentz Institute is affiliated with the Lorentz Center, which hosts workshops on topics of current interest and helps create a stimulating research environment.

The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. We are committed to expand fundamental knowledge by curiosity and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline; their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2,300 staff and almost 5,000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together.

Terms and conditions
We offer a full-time, 6 year term position, with the possibility of a tenure position based on performance. Salary range from € 3.746,-  to € 5.127,-  gross per month (pay scale 11 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).  In exceptional cases, candidates at the associate or full professor level will be taken into consideration.

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses(8.3 %), training and career development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. For more information, see the website.

Information Tenure Track
We offer a tenure track appointment as assistant professor that upon successful performance will lead to promotion to a tenured position as associate professor and upon continued growth to promotion to full professor. We offer a clear and inviting career path, support in the development of your personal and professional skills, and an attractive start-up package. A special mentoring program is offered with fellow Tenure Trackers in a peer group as well as with senior staff members in the department. We actively support learning Dutch through departmentally funded courses.

Diversity
Leiden University is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from members of underrepresented groups. Gender balance is an explicit aim of our institute.

Information
If you have any questions about the procedure, please contact Jan Aarts, email director@physics.leidenuniv.nl.
