About the workplace

Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is a research organisation working to promote bioeconomy and sustainable use of natural resources. We provide solutions and services to our customers based on best available scientific knowledge. Our research results and services generate added value and sustainability as well as scientific evidence to support decision making. We carry out research on forestry, agriculture, food, game, and fisheries. We also perform statutory services.

Being open-minded and curious and having a strong will to leave a positive mark to the world binds Luke people together. Together we build a positive working culture where each other’s work is highly respected. In Luke, the work assignments are versatile and employees can influence the content of their work. We work in a mobile work culture which gives you the possibility to work from wherever it suits you the best. Luke offers a multidisciplinary international research environment with unique research infrastructures, experimental sites and well-equipped laboratories.

Work tasks

The field of research is on methods related to optimization and multiple-objective forest planning in changing environmental conditions. In particular, the post is related to methods addressing the risks and uncertainty in decision making. The risks may vary from inventory errors to model errors, from uncertainties regarding the preferences of the decision makers to knowledge gaps in simulators, and from climate change to natural hazards. The scope of planning problems extends from traditional timber-oriented planning calculations to multi-objective problems including many ecosystem services of forests.

The researcher is expected to work in a multi-disciplinary group to solve different planning problems together with experts in forest ecology, inventory and modelling. The researcher is also expected to take part in solving optimization and planning problems in customer-related projects.

Qualifications

The researcher should have a master degree in relevant field (e.g. applied mathematics, technology, forestry), but a doctoral degree is seen as an asset. We appreciate a proven track record showing understanding of methodology such as linear optimization, heuristic optimization, spatial optimization, stochastic optimization, risk management and multi-criteria decision analysis and application of simulation methods and complex model systems. Proven experience in writing research articles and research proposals is appreciated.

Strong research network, both in Finland and internationally, as well as close interaction with private and public stakeholders are seen as an advantage.
