The Department of Separation Science of the LUT School of Engineering Science is looking for a junior researcher (doctoral student) in algal biotechnology for wastewater treatment to conduct doctoral studies and research. The position is based in Mikkeli, Finland. The junior researcher will work in the Water Treatment and Algal Biotechnology research group led by Professor Amit Bhatnagar. The research group focuses on applications of microalgae for wastewater treatment and resource recovery.

The junior researcher will focus on (i) the screening, selection and characterization of the (native) microalgae strains for wastewater treatment and resource recovery and (ii) the production of biomolecules with commercial importance from harvested algal biomass. We expect the appointed applicant to be able to combine engineering principles with upstream and downstream processes in algal biotechnology.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a higher university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. algal biotechnology, algal physiology, bioprocess engineering, microbiology, marine microbiology, or other closely related fields) and the ability and motivation to complete the doctoral studies within the normative duration of the studies for the degree (i.e. four years). Experience in microalgae cultivation and biochemical analysis is a prerequisite. Experience in data-analysis and scientific reporting and publication will be considered an advantage. The junior researcher will spend four to six months in researcher exchange at the partner university PoliMi in Italy.

The position requires strong communication skills and an excellent written and spoken command of English. The appointed applicant is expected to prepare a postgraduate study and research plan together with his/her supervisor and to obtain the doctoral study right within one year of the start of the employment relationship. The appointed applicant will work in close collaboration with other team members and other research groups at LUT University and internationally. Our research group is well-connected internationally, and the junior researcher will have a chance to present his/her findings in national and international conferences. Research visits abroad may also be discussed.

The employment relationship will start with a one-year term, which can be extended for another three years provided that the studies have progressed as expected.

The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The work will start in May 2021 (negotiable) with a six-month trial period.

Please fill out the online application form and attach the following:

The deadline for application is 15 March 2021 at midnight Finnish local time (UTC + 3). Please submit your application together with the required attachments through the university's online application system.
