"Research and study with perspective"

The University of Wuppertal is a modern, dynamic and research-oriented campus university with interdisciplinary profile lines in research and teaching. Collectively, more than 25,000 researchers, teachers and students face the challenges in the fields of society, culture, education, economy, technology, nature and the environment.

The School of Art and Design invites applications for

a university professorship in "Fundamentals in Industrial Design"

(legal basis: W 2 LBesG NRW; § 36 HG NRW).

The more industrial design permeates our entire material and non-material world the greater are the demands on design and its responsibility towards society, the environment and the individual.

The Department of Industrial Design at the University of Wuppertal is concerned with the scientifically based development of innovative, constructive-technical, human-oriented products.

Its main focus is on research and the development of material and immaterial product cultures with particular emphasis on the interactions of technical, economic, socio-cultural and political factors of influence. Industrial design is oriented towards future economic, ecological and social sustainability. The basis of university education is research-based teaching with a focus on meta-scientific questions of design, composition and theory of design in a design context. The artistic-scientific research in the subject area is directed towards the interweaving of art and design in particular. It pursues experimental research and testing of new design methods and production processes on the one hand, and the search for forms for future objects and living worlds in the context of artistic projects on the other.

The successful candidate is to teach the fundamentals of art and design as part of the curriculum in Industrial Design and will have to place special emphasis on plastic-spatial skills. They provide the basis for three-dimensional design processes and artistic-experimental strategies which, due to the process of constantly challenging established standardizations, can create new design solutions.

Expectations:

We are seeking to appoint a candidate with a distinctive artistic personality, a proven track record in teaching and design work and excellent qualifications in teaching fundamentals of art in industrial design. The respective oeuvre should include artistic and functional drafting as well as design work which can be translated into a system of introductory courses for industrial designers, especially in the field of plastic design. The successful candidate should be in a position to do both, to practice artistic or industrial design works as well as to teach these fields educationally profound and effectively.

In the Department of Industrial Design, you will be responsible for the subject "Fundamentals in Industrial Design" and you will support our students in the transition from classical school education to independent, creative design work. This requires a special educational awareness for groups and individuals when developing and drafting teaching, learning and research models.

You should also be able to design and implement interdisciplinary teaching formats as well as workshops and projects in cooperation with other degree programs of the School of Art and Design.

With regard to the particularities of artistic methods, an interdisciplinary cooperation with design, concept design and technical development is also desired. This also includes the supervision and co-supervision of projects and final theses in Bachelor and Master courses. You will teach your lectures and seminars in German and, if required, in English.

The successful candidate is expected to actively support academic autonomy at the university.

Requirements for employment:

You have completed a university degree in a relevant field of study, preferably in architecture, sculpture and related fields of art with outstanding achievements. Your special aptitude for design is evident and verified by your artistic pursuits and your portfolio of design works.

As a rule, proof of special artistic achievements has to be demonstrated by outstanding performance during five years of artistic activity, of which at least three years must have been spent outside the higher education sector.

Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding in higher education, especially in collaborative projects, is much appreciated

The University of Wuppertal regards gender equality to be an important task, which the successful candidate will help to implement.
