Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our main campus is located in Espoo, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness in the future as well. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

Aalto University’s School of Chemical Engineering, Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems, invites applications for

Tenure Track/Tenured Professor in Microbial Physiology

The position is to be filled at any level of the Aalto University tenure track system (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). The position is full-time and depending on the positioning on the tenure track, either on fixed or permanent term.

Microbial physiology deals with the quantitative description of cellular level mechanisms, biochemical pathways, and regulation of metabolism in microbial cells. In particular we see that the field of microbial physiology is necessary for using microbes as cell factories for the production of chemicals, proteins, materials, etc. The efficiency of such production processes requires quantitative and systems-level understanding of cellular processes including understanding of metabolic fluxes, as well as carbon and redox balances. In order to construct cell factories, the quantitative understanding must be translated into genetic engineering approaches. Research in microbial physiology can involve approaches such as modelling, metabolic engineering, and synthetic biology.

As a professor at the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (http://bio2.aalto.fi/en/) you will establish and lead your own research group. You will contribute to teaching at BSc, MSc, and doctoral level.

Scientific Environment

The department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (BIO2) (http://bio2.aalto.fi/en/), one of the three departments in the School of Chemical Engineering at Aalto University, has an internationally leading reputation in basic and applied research for the development of advanced materials from natural resources. It is one of the leading European research and higher education institutions in the field of sustainable chemistry and engineering based on the utilization of renewable resources. BIO2 aims to contribute to the development of novel solutions to move towards sustainable primary production and processing systems that can produce materials with fewer inputs, less environmental impact and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Within bioscience, the department has research in bioprocess technology, molecular biotechnology, enzyme technology, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, biomolecular-, and biohybrid materials. Other strengths of the department include sustainable materials and products based on lignocellulose, ranging from nanomaterials to novel cellulose-based textiles.

Requirements

We are looking for applicants who have:

Applicants with an industrial background in addition to a scientific career are very welcome. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research work, teaching and academic leadership and activity in the scientific community.

What we offer

We offer a research-oriented environment, with highly functional laboratories and research infrastructure (http://www.bioeconomyinfra.fi/). The research groups in related fields, such as biochemistry, biomolecular materials, synthetic biology, protein technology, molecular biotechnology, and bioprocess technology form a collaborative environment that supports the development of the field of microbial physiology, and providing beneficial interactions.

We offer the possibility to work within a well-resourced learning community where the students are rigorously selected and highly motivated. This results in an unusually interactive and intellectually challenging atmosphere.

Aalto University provides its employees with occupational health care services and retirement benefits. Finland is a healthy and safe living environment, offering many excellent state-subsidized services including affordable day care, free schools and universities, which are consistently ranked among the best in the world. For more information about living and working in Finland, see https://www.aalto.fi/en/careers-at-aalto/for-international-staff.

The salary is determined based on applicant's experience and qualifications. Activities of the department are located in the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University in Espoo (Helsinki metropolitan area).

Tenure track in Aalto University

The position will be placed on the Aalto University Tenure Track. Individuals on the tenure track have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of their scope of duty. Launched in 2010, the tenure track has attracted a wide range of international applicants, giving Aalto University the possibility of recruiting top experts and young talent to join the Aalto University community.

Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. For more information on the tenure track system of Aalto University, please see https://www.aalto.fi/en/tenure-track.

Ready to apply?

To apply, please submit your application through the online recruitment system (link below). Your application should include the following application materials in English and in PDF-format:

From amongst the applicants in the first phase, Aalto University will select those who may be asked to supplement their application materials. Supplemented applications are submitted for review by external experts (the second phase of the application process). Based on the application materials and external evaluations, the Departmental Committee will choose the most suitable applicants to visit the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems and deliver teaching demonstrations, if the pandemic situation allows (if not, the teaching demonstrations will be delivered remotely).

General instructions for applicants including evaluation criteria, language requirements and guidelines for compiling your CV and teaching portfolio  are given at https://www.aalto.fi/en/tenure-track/interested-in-joining-our-tenure-track.

All material should be in English. The application material will not be returned.

Applicants are also encouraged to provide their Researcher ID (www.researcherid.com) or corresponding information in the application.

We believe that people from diverse backgrounds can together reach the best results. Diversity is part of who we are: for example, over 40% of our academic faculty comes from outside Finland. We warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds, especially minorities, to apply, as we want to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness in the future as well. We are committed to equal and transparent recruitment procedures.
