Research in the Augment group of the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Section of the Department of Computer Science at the KU Leuven focuses on how end-users interact with personalised systems, such as recommender systems, personalised search and targeted advertisement. The objective is to enable end-users to understand the rational of such systems and to enable them to steer the personalisation process with input and feedback. The focus is on visualisation and interaction techniques, using the full spectrum of hardware from small mobile devices to large multi-touch displays. Applications include learning analytics, precision agriculture, healthcare, media consumption, and digital humanities.

We have an open position (fully funded) in Explainable AI. We welcome applications of both postdocs and PhD candidates.

Although several explanation methods have been proposed, little work has been done to evaluate whether the proposed methods indeed enhance human interpretability. Many existing methods also require significant expertise and are static. Several researchers have voiced the need for interaction with explanations as a core requirement to support understanding. In this project, we will research the next generation of model-agnostic explanation methods that are tailored to the needs of non-expert users. We will also research how these explanation methods can be combined to develop more powerful explanation interfaces, and how such interfaces can be adapted on-the-fly to different personal and situational characteristics

We expect from applicants:

Funding is available immediately. The research will be carried out at the Department of Computer Science of KU Leuven.
