The USN School of Business has two vacancies for two PhD Research Fellow positions in education leadership, management and governance starting 15.08.21.

Both positions are located at the Department of business, history and social science and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold.

  • Vacancy A is for an employment period of four years including 25% duty work (merit-oriented research assistance, teaching assistance, and/or administrative work related to the project).
  • Vacancy B is for an employment period of three years full time.

About the PhD-Project
It is a premise for employment for both positions that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN’s PEDRES PhD-program within three months of accession in the position.

The announced PhD-positions is a part of the CLASS – Comparisons of Leadership Autonomy in School districts and Schools research project at USN granted by the Norwegian Research Council. The PhD students will be a part of the CLASS research team.

CLASS is a comparative study where we combine studies of documents, interviews and surveys to investigate education leaders' autonomy in schools and municipalities in Norway, Sweden and Germany from the 1990s until today. Education today is characterized by complexity and involve a number of students, parents, teachers and stakeholder groups. In the study, we take a closer look at newer forms of management with high expectations to education leaders´ management competence and relational capacity in different education systems (Norway), (Germany) and (Sweden).

It is a requirement that the PhD-project presented by applicants are framed within the CLASS project thematic and methods. The two PhD-projects will be integrated into all parts of the larger research project such as data collection, data analysis and publication of results. It is an advantage for applicants if their planned projects involve comparison of education leadership in school districts and/or in schools in the Norwegian and Swedish contexts, or in the Norwegian and German context.

The PhD-candidates will be supported by the larger research group and they will take part in the activities of the research team as team members and in the research groups of the involved researchers. Due to the comparative nature of the CLASS project it is expected that the PhD-candidates for periods of time will conduct their research in Sweden and/or Germany as a supplement to the work done at the main workplace at the University of South-Eastern Norway.
