Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our campus is located in Otaniemi, about 10 km west from the city center of Helsinki, Finland.

Aalto University School of Engineering invites applications for:

Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Water Engineering

Job description: We seek for ambitious and enthusiastic professor in water engineering within the area of municipal water engineering in the circular economy. The position is under the Water and environmental engineering research group www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-built-environment/water-and-environmental-engineering and links to teaching in the Master’s programme (http://www.aalto.fi/en/study-options/masters-programme-in-water-and-environmental-engineering) and the ENG Doctoral programme (http://www.aalto.fi/en/research-art/aalto-doctoral-programme-in-engineering).

Requirements and evaluation process: The position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The Aalto tenure track principles are explained at www.aalto.fi/en/tenure-track.

Applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in a discipline relevant for this position (e.g., in sanitary, environmental, chemical or civil engineering), and should demonstrate excellent research potential in addition to good teaching ability.

In circular economy resource input, emission, and energy loss are minimized by closing energy and material loops. Water sector can contribute to the circular economy e.g. by closing water loops and by recovering resources and energy from wastewater.

A successful candidate contributes to cutting-edge research and education in the areas including but not limited to: physical, chemical and biological wastewater treatment; design, operation, modelling and control of municipal wastewater treatment processes; removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater as well as recovery of nutrients and energy from water. A successful candidate is an independent thinker who has a strong methodological competence in water science and technology, combining theoretical and experimental approaches in laboratory, pilot and full-scale applications. Experience of engineering approaches in implementing research results in full-scale is an asset.

Following Aalto University’s strategy, we are looking for a person whose research and teaching relate to University-level focus areas of human-centered living environment, digitalization, and sustainable use of natural resources. Human societies are facing grand challenges, such as rapid urbanization and land degradation under changing climate, management of the finite land and water resources, and widespread environmental pollution. The balance between natural and human-made environment requires novel and innovative solutions fostering circular economy and securing sustainable, and resilient water systems. The new professorship strengthens our ability to address these challenges through world-class research and generation of high impact toward sustainable future societies. Furthermore, the applicant should be willing and able to foster active teaching collaboration at the department, be able to acquire external research funding from Finnish and international sources and be able to demonstrate potential regarding societal impact of research. The minimum language requirement is fluency in written and spoken English.

Evaluation follows the Tenure track system at Aalto University and is mainly based on research merits as well as the applicant’s potential to develop into a world-class scientist. In all levels of the tenure track system, a professor is expected to perform high-quality research and teaching at post-graduate, graduate and undergraduate levels, to be an active member of the international scientific community, and to exhibit academic leadership. Advancements in the tenure track are based on scheduled performance assessments, which take into account the candidate’s merits in all these areas.

Research environment: The Department of Built Environment is an internationally oriented community that has 28 professors and more than 180 employees from 18 countries. The department is further divided into five units focusing on the following themes: water and environmental engineering, real estate economics, spatial planning, and transportation engineering, geoinformatics, and measurement and modelling of built environments.

The new professor position aims to strengthen and complement the methodological expertise and the thematic rigor of the Water and environmental engineering research group. The group’s research and teaching currently covers areas of water and development, water resources management, and water and wastewater engineering. Our work has strong basis on taking advantage of the digitalization within the water field, including data explosion, simulation, modelling, as well as sensor and remote sensing technologies. We exploit open big data on water resources along with various types of social, economic, and environmental information. We address methodological development and applications in computational hydrology and environmental hydraulics, global water challenges and water policies and planning. Our themes extend to resource efficient drinking water production and wastewater treatment through developing the process technologies, smart water supply and sewer collection systems, and hydroinformatics. The research infrastructure of the group includes water quality and environmental hydraulics laboratories supporting bench and pilot-scale studies. The group hosts the Master’s Programme in Water and Environmental Engineering, educating master and doctoral level students to have strong competence and identity in the field.

Salary: The salary of the professor is based on the salary system of Aalto University, but applicants may also state their own salary requirements. The contract also includes occupational health benefits. The position has a start-up package.

How to apply: The application material for the tenure track position includes:

All material should be submitted in English. The material will not be returned. The documents are to be submitted in PDF format and the file names are to follow the format documentname_lastname_firstname.pdf (e.g. cover letter_ lastname_firstname.pdf).
