Description

Established in 2007 and maintained by an annual gift from The Walter & Eliza Hall Trust.

The purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to a meritorious student studying the Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) program whose financial circumstances might otherwise prevent them from achieving their maximum potential during their university study.

The funds are intended to assist with the cost of equipment, materials and such other study-related items as may be required by the recipient.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must:

  • be a domestic student in accordance with The University's Fee Policy; and
  • be enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Social Work/ Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) program; and
  • do not hold another similar scholarship.

Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received a scholarship funded by the Walter & Eliza Hall Trust.

How to apply

You are encouraged to read the definitive rules for this scholarship prior to application, in particular any specific eligibility conditions.

Download application form and email to the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work Scholarships nmsw@uq.edu.au

Selection criteria

The recipient must demonstrate financial need, and also have performed satisfactorily in the program to date. Grade point averages will be considered; however, the grade point average will not be the sole determinant in satisfactory progress – the applicants' behaviour, class attendance, dedication to the program and career aspirations are also a part of the selection process. In particular, the Trust is interested to hear about why you are studying social work, and where you see yourself as a social worker when you graduate. In the spirit of the Trust, they would like to assist a social work student in financial need who is aspiring to positively contribute back to Australian society in the social work field once they graduate.

Once the recipient is selected and approved through the UQ Undergraduate Scholarships section, the recipient may receive further correspondence from the Trust. A representative from the Trust may be in touch with the recipient throughout the year about their studies and for information about what the scholarship money went towards by way of equipment (e.g. computers), materials (e.g. textbooks, copy cards) and other study-related items (for example, the cost of transport directly to attend practicum). Please note that only in exceptional circumstances should the funds be used for payment of day-to-day living expenses such as rent, utility bills etc.
