We are excited to post a job announcement for a full-time PhD position at UCLouvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium in the research project “Rethinking Climate Fiction: Activism, Spirituality, Literary Form (CLI+)”, supervised by Ben De Bruyn.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The selected candidate will work on a fully funded PhD project in literary studies that analyzes a corpus of fiction and nonfiction texts to describe and understand how distinct spiritual traditions are used in contemporary Anglophone literature and ecological discourse. The project will analyze religious language and imagery in environmental writing as well as ecological concerns in spiritual texts to chart different articulations of a post-secular “crisis spirituality”. It will also identify the precise formal and rhetorical strategies used to re-enchant the environment in the writings of prize-winning poets, essayists, and novelists. What is more, the project will connect recent versions of this ecospiritual imaginary with broader, interdisciplinary debates about emotion and activism in the challenging context of the climate crisis.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The PhD candidate will be collaborating closely with colleagues from UCLouvain working on contemporary literature and literatures in English, as a member of the research group ECR (Ecriture, création, représentation). In addition, the candidate will participate in international workshops and conferences related to the subject and field of the project. The position is funded by the Fonds Spéciaux de Recherche of the Université Catholique de Louvain and the salary is determined according to UCLouvain regulations for PhD scholarships. Employment will start on October 1st, 2021. The grant covers personnel costs for a period of two years, after which the PhD candidate is expected to apply for an extension. As part of this project, the candidate is also expected to submit an application with the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FRS-FNRS). His/her research is expected to result in a doctoral degree.

HOW TO APPLY

Candidates are invited to submit their applications by e-mail to Prof. Ben De Bruyn by August 15, 2021 (ben.debruyn@uclouvain.be). The application should include the following documents, preferably in a single pdf file:

On the basis of these documents, candidates will be selected for an interview at the start of September 2021. The project itself will start on October 1st, 2021. For further details and questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ben De Bruyn: ben.debruyn@uclouvain.be.
