The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for a temporary position of a

Professor in Sociology for the time period 1.1.–30.6.2022

Sociology belongs to the department of Social Research. Areas of expertise profiling the department’s teaching and research include social inequality, well-being and health issues, markets and consumption, and the policies having influence on these areas. The topics of study and teaching of sociology are in particular social, economic and intergeneration inequalities, demography and family relations, housing as well as political economy and gender. The strength of the unit lies in extensive methodological expertise.

The special field of position is restricted to quantitative research in the field of social inequality. Tasks of the professor include teaching in courses according to the curriculum and the special field, research and other tasks (potential administrative, university-associated etc. tasks). Besides teaching in curriculum of social sciences and sociology, the tasks of the position include teaching and supervision in masters and doctoral programmes of the research flagship INVEST (Inequalities, Interventions and a New Welfare State). 

The eligibility criteria for a Professors are defined in the rules of procedure of the University of Turku https://www.utu.fi/en/university/organisation. The candidate is required to have a suitable doctoral degree, high-level of academic competence, experience in management of scientific research, evidence of international co-operation in his or her field of study, and the ability to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.

When assessing the merits of an applicant, scientific work, teaching experience and teacher training, ability to produce study material, other teaching merits and participation in doctoral training will be taken into account. When the position is filled, high quality of quantitative methodological skills and research merits in the field of social inequality, are considered as special advantages. Recent publishing and teaching activities as well as other academic merits are also taken into account when assessing the applicant's merits.

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University salary system and will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 5 300 – 5 700 € / month.

The trial period will be three months.

Applicants are required to include in their application an academic portfolio, a curriculum vitae and a list publications, as directed by the Faculty, and five publications considered important for the performance of the applicant's duties, as well as other documents that may affect the performance of the position.
