Description

Supervisor - Professor Brian Lovell

The project is to develop advanced techniques for Face Recognition and Face Synthesis based on Deep Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The major aim is to synthesize human faces using State of the Art techniques such as StyleGAN2 for the purpose of creating a ethical database for the training of improved face recognition systems and related technologies. A secondary objective is to improve the recognition of masked persons during the COVID pandemic by synthesizing human faces wearing masks.  This project has UQ Ethics exemption as no real human faces are required.

A working knowledge of deep learning, Tensorflow, Keras, Pytorch, Python, image processing, biometrics, face recognition, face synthesis, StyleGAN and StyleGAN2 would be of benefit to someone working on this project.

Research environment

The University of Queensland Artificial Intelligence (UQAI) group is a world leader in deep learning and AI researching at the very edge of these exciting technologies. The PhD Advisor, Professor Lovell, is a Fellow of the Asia-Pacific AI Association, member of the IEEE Biometrics Council and IAPR TC4 on Biometrics and has supervised over 30 PhDs to successful completion.  The Group has significant NVIDIA GPU infrastructure including several V100 GPU processors for deep learning. Researchers also have access to UQ's huge Wiener deep learning supercomputer which is the largest GPU cluster in the Southern Hemisphere.

UQ ranks in the world’s top universities, as measured by several key independent ranking, including the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (43), the US News Best Global Universities Rankings (52), QS World University Rankings (47), Academic Ranking of World Universities (55), and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (60). UQ again topped the nation in the prestigious Nature Index and our Life Sciences subject field ranking in the Academic Ranking of World Universities was the highest in Australia at 20.
