Description

Established by donations from Marie and Alf Berry in memory of their granddaughter Helen Kay, a postgraduate research student who died in 1999 while completing her degree, the scholarship commemorates the work of a promising young scholar of Australian literature, life writing and the environment.

This is a Philanthropic Higher Degree by Research, Grant Scholarship.

Eligibility

The Helen Kay PhD Scholarship is open to Higher Degree by Research candidates conducting research in the School of Communication and Arts.

The Scholarship is awarded annually to a PhD student in the school who satisfies the committee that he or she will submit their thesis for examination within the 3-month period of the Scholarship being awarded.  The 2021 round for the Helen Kay PhD Scholarship will be awarded in late October, and applicants must submit their thesis for examination by the end of January 2022.

Selection criteria

The 2021 round for the Helen Kay PhD Scholarship will be awarded in late October, and applicants must submit their thesis for examination by the end of January 2022.

Applicants must provide evidence to the satisfaction of the selection committee that, with financial assistance provided by the scholarship, they will submit by the date.

Selection of a scholar will be made by the Dean of the Graduate School on the advice of a selection committee comprised of:

  • the Communication and Arts Head of School or their delegate
  • academic representatives from Communication and Arts, and
  • a student representative who is undertaking a research higher degree and is not an applicant in the round.

Applicants will be ranked on the basis of:

  • advice of the principal advisor as to the likelihood of the date being met; and
  • the level of promise shown by the student; and
  • any other matters the selection committee sees fit.
