CALL FOR PAPERS
International Conference

Anatolia-Caucasus-Iran: Ethnic and  Linguistic Contacts

10 - 12 May, 2018
Yerevan, Armenia

 Institute of Oriental Studies
(Russian-Armenian State University, Yerevan, Armenia)

in cooperation with the

Institute of Empirical Linguistics
(Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany)

The Anatolia-Caucasus-Iran region is distinguished by its multi-ethnic and multilingual nature. Languages in these areas belong to different language families — Indo-European, Turkic, Caucasian — and have long been in constant interactions, shaping various combinations of linguistic phenomena: substrate-superstrate-adstrate; language unions (Sprachbunds), like Armenian-Turkic-Caucasian, including within the same language continuum, as, for instance, South Caucasian-Aturpatakan Iranian Sprachbund. Moreover, nowhere in the world the spoken language is so actualized with regard to the ethnic issues than in the mentioned regions. The discussion of all these topics and their different aspects will be the target of this gathering.

Academics of any educational and professional level (MA, PhD, Post-Doc and beyond) are invited to submit papers and panel proposals relating to all aspects of linguistics and ethnography of Anatolia-Caucasus-Iran, including:

  • Ethnic and Language Contacts
  • Ethnogenetic processes
  • Identity Issues
  • Language as Identity Marker
  • Lexical and grammatical borrowings
  • Language unions (Sprachbunds)
  • Substrate issue
  • Toponomastics (hydrotoponymy as historical source)
  • Ethnobotany
  • Folk Beliefs

The working language of the Conference is English. Separate sessions may be organized in Persian or/and Russian.

Abtracts not exceeding 400 words alongside with a brief CV including contact details are to be emailed by March 15, 2018 to ethnic.linguistic.contacts@gmail.com, with the Subject “Anatolia-Caucasus-Iran: Ethnic and Linguistic Contacts”.
