This competition requires entrants to elaborate their ideas on a fictitious Japanese “Machiya” old townhouse of approx. 72sqm in size. The renovation idea has to be for residential purposes. Residence with a shop/office is also eligible for entry, but the residential area should be the main focus of the case. Instead of feasibility, the competition is expecting entries with innovative and out-of-the-box ideas. The winning idea may turn into reality in the future in collaboration with the proposer and Hachise Co. Ltd. About Hachise Co. Ltd.: Hachise is a real estate company based in Kyoto, Japan that mainly focuses on the renovation and sales of pre-owned houses, especially the traditional “Machiya” (or “Kyo-machiya) townhouses in Kyoto. Hachise has been renovating nearly 500 pre-owned homes and has proposed numerous housing plans and living styles to customers aiming for “safety, security, and comfort”. Due to the town’s development and lifestyle changes, about 800 Machiyas are still demolished annually in Kyoto, and the number of vacant houses is increasing. At Hachise, in order to preserve the Machiyas in the future, we acquire old Machiyas, renovate them to convey their original charm, then look for buyers and tenants. By such a process, Hachise continues to work and prevent the Machiyas from being demolished as much as possible. Through this competition, we’d like to search for innovative ideas not only locally but all over the world, since we always cherish the voices of our international customers (or potential ones). We also hope that through the student competition platform, this competition can reach more traditional house lovers and raise their awareness of the crisis in demolishing Machiyas.
