Wenner-Gren Foundation - Engaged Anthropology Grant 2018
The Wenner-Gren Foundation has three major goals: to support significant and innovative anthropological research into humanity's biological and cultural origins, development, and variation; to foster the international community of research scholars in anthropology and to provide leadership at the forefronts of the discipline.
A Wenner-Gren grantee may apply for the Engaged Anthropology Grant ($5,000 maximum) upon completion of the final reporting requirements for the Dissertation Fieldwork or Post-Ph.D. Research Grant.
This grant is designed to enable grantees to return to their research locale to share their research results with:
- The community in which the research was conducted, and/or
- The academic/anthropological community in the region or country of research.
The Foundation realizes that the appropriate form of engagement will vary depending on the type of project that was undertaken and the location of the research. Emphasis should be on disseminating the research results of Wenner-Gren funded research. Applications are evaluated according to the project’s capacity for producing engaged participation, cultivating mutually beneficial collaborations, and forging equitable relationships among all parties involved. This grant does not support the continuation of research activities, the establishment of websites, or other forms of engagement with western anthropologists who typically have access to the international academic community and literature.
Final decisions are made within three months of deadlines. Applications must be received within six years of the original approved date of the Dissertation Fieldwork or Post-Ph.D. Research Grant. Dissertation Fieldwork grantees may apply for the Engaged Anthropology Grant before the completion of their doctorate, but funds will not be awarded until the doctorate is in hand.
Applicants must submit application materials using the Foundation's online application submission procedure.
Eligibility
- Applicants must have been funded previously through a Dissertation Fieldwork or Post-Ph.D. Research Grant and the proposed engagement activities must be a direct outgrowth of this Wenner-Gren funded research.
- Applicants must have completed their Dissertation Fieldwork or Post-Ph.D. Research Grant and fulfilled the final reporting requirements before applying for the Engaged Anthropology Grant.
- Applicants must apply within six years of the original approve date of their Dissertation Fieldwork or Post-Ph.D. Research Grant. If you do not know your official approve date, it can be accessed by looking up your name on the Grantees Section of the Wenner Gren website.
- Applications are accepted from Dissertation Fieldwork grantees who are close to completing their doctorate or equivalent degree; however, the Engaged Anthropology Grant cannot be awarded until the degree is completed. Note that the Foundation requires the degree to have been completed before the start date of the engagement activity listed on the application form.
- Applicants may apply multiple times for the same or different engagement projects within the stipulated six-year period, however:
- Only one application for an Engaged Anthropology Grant will be accepted from an applicant per funding season,
- Applicants for the Engaged Anthropology Grant cannot apply to any other Wenner-Gren funding program during the same funding season or have an active grant with the Foundation at the time they submit their application ( the Conference and Workshop Grant program is the only exception to this rule).
- If an applicant is awarded an Engaged Anthropology Grant, he/she will not be eligible to apply for a different engagement project tied to the same Dissertation Fieldwork or Post-Ph.D. Research Grant.
- If an Engaged Anthropology Grant is approved, the applicant must agree to comply with the Requirements and Conditions of the Engaged Anthropology Grant.
- Individuals cannot apply for the EAG if they have a pending application for another Wenner-Gren program.
