Young prospective students who want to obtain practical journalism experience overseas should not pass up this opportunity! Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists is happy to announce its Dag Hammarskjöld Journalism Fellowships for the academic session 2023/2024.

The application is available in the fields of television, radio, and internet journalists primarily from developing countries in Africa, Asia (including Pacific Island nations), and Latin America/the Caribbean. It will cover the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) deliberations for approximately 10-12 weeks beginning in September 2023.U.N. journalists created the Dag Hammarskjöld Fund as an independent organization in 1962 in order to create a living tribute to the legacy of Dag Hammarskjöld, who served as Secretary-General of the United Nations. It is still run by journalists employed by the United Nations and depends on financial support from that organization.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible Countries: Career journalists from mainly developing nations of Africa, Asia (including Pacific Island countries), and Latin America/the Caribbean
Acceptable Course or Subjects: The fellowship will be awarded to journalists from all fields.
Admissible Criteria: Applicants must go through the following admissible criteria:
Applicants must be employed by bona fide media organizations as print, television, radio or web journalists, aged 25-35, have a current passport, provide work samples from 2022, and must speak English proficiently. Freelance journalists are also eligible.

Offered Benefits

Selected journalists will gain a better grasp of the United Nations’ work by attending working sessions, press conferences, and interviews firsthand, allowing for in-depth reporting on matters important to their audiences.
Fellows will connect with media colleagues from throughout the world and learn about the issues that journalism encounters in different nations.
Board members and other UN journalists will assist Fellows in gaining access to the resources they need to write their stories.
Arrangements will be made for the Fellows to visit New York area media organizations, as well as institutions striving to foster and safeguard the journalism profession, as their schedules allow.

Application Process

How to Apply: Applicants must complete an online application form and submit the required documentation. All applications must be submitted in English or with an English translation.
Supporting Documents: Applicants must submit the following supported documents:
A minimum of 3 work samples published on or after 2022.
Letter of recommendation from the editor or director of the news organization where the journalist is now employed.
A copy of the applicant’s most recent passport.
Two letters of recommendation from people who are familiar with the applicant’s work and can remark on their journalistic ability, the potential for growth, and personal characteristics.
Admission Requirements: Applicants must fulfill the following admission requirements:
A statement (no more than 500 words) expressing a desire for the Fellowship and describing how the experience will strengthen the applicant’s grasp of international diplomacy and UN issues.
To accept the Fellowship, applicant journalists must have a current passport and apply for and get an I-1 journalist visa from a US Embassy or Consulate.
Language Requirement: Applicants must fulfill the following language requirement:
English being one of the principal languages spoken in the United Nations, and competency in the language is necessary.
